Spotlight: Adventure Time!

Abril é o mês da estréia no Cartoon Network um novo desenho animado que promete ser muito, muito legal: Adventure Time With Finn and Jake! A ilustração em destaque é minha contribuição à série de tributos da Autumn Society ao novo desenho e que acabou virando uma exposição no Lobby da própria Cartoon Network! Muito legal!

This month we will see the debut of a new cartoon at Cartoon Network: Adventure Time With Finn And Jake! It looks really awesome! The illustration on the Spotlight is my contribution to the tribute series created by the Autumn Society that ended being turned into a exposition at the Cartoon Network Lobby! How cool is that?

Entrevista para Revista Ilustrar #15

Estou na edição desse mês da Revista Ilustrar, "primeira revista 100% brasileira feita por ilustradores, voltada para o mercado de ilustração nacional e internacional." A Edição #15, além de incluir este que vos fala sendo entrevistado na seção portfolio, também trás em suas páginas Brad Holland, Francis Vallejo (Que foi a capa dessa edição), Roger Cruz (Sketchbook, muito legal!), Elias Silveira (com um "making of" da capa da MAD), Renato Alarcão e Juarez Machado respondendo 15 perguntas...

Na entrevista eu falo um pouco sobre o começo da minha jornada como ilustrador, sobre meu estilo - ou melhor, prefiro o termo acadêmico "jeito" - de ilustrar, paper toys, Rabiscão e etc... Espero não ter dito muita bobagem ou pelo menos que a entrevista não esteja parecendo conversa de bêbado...! Ha ha!

Agradecimentos ao incansável Ricardo Antunes, que além de moderar o Ilustragrupo ainda encontra tempo e energia para fazer essa revista, que é uma fonte inesgotável de inspiração para qualquer um que possua interesse por ilustração.

E nesse ano que acabou, teve um monte de coisas legais. Não faltou trabalho (ainda bem!) legais para clientes legais, uma de minhas ilustrações preferidas - Mano A Mano - foi escolhida para integrar a galeria da American Illustrator, o paper toy Dentuço fez sua estréia na seção Print And Play... Mas gostaria de destacar 3 coisas que foram muito especiais para mim:

The year of 2009 is over and a lot of cool things happened. I had a lot of exciting commissions (thank God!), one of my favorite illustrations - Mano A Mano - was chosen to be part of the American Illustrator gallery, The Bucket-Tooth Car paper toy made its very successful debut... But I would like to point out 3 things that were really special to me:



Em 2008, ao voltar do Bistecão Ilustrado, pensei em como seria legal se tivesse alguma coisa parecida, aqui em Brasília... E agora tem! Desde Julho desse ano temos o Rabiscão, o encontro de ilustradores que acontece todos os mês na Tio Gú Creperia. O Rabiscão dá oportunidade de conhecer e encontrar pessoalmente ilustradores talentosos da cidade e é o motivo pelo qual aguardo ansioso pela chegada da segunda sexta-feira do mês... Obrigado de coração a todos que ajudam a fazer do Rabiscão uma realidade! Em 2010 tem mais! Espero que o Rabiscão continue durante muito tempo e reunindo cada vez mais ilustradores não apenas de Brasília mas - por que não? - do Brasil.

In 2008, when I came back from the Bistecão Ilustrado (a gathering of illustrators that takes place in São Paulo) I thought about how cool could it be if we had something similar in my home town... This year the Rabiscão was born, a monthly meeting of illustrators and a pleasant opportunity to get out of the shell for a little while and meet fellow illustrators. The Rabiscão will continue in 2010...



Quando recebi o convite para fazer parte da Autumn Society of Philadelphia, não imaginava o quão divertido seria... E é gratificante poder trocar idéias com artistas de grande talento e cujo trabalho é simplesmente um festa para os olhos. Não é a toa que a Autumn Society já está atraindo a atenção não apenas em Philly ou nos Estados Unidos, mas também em outros países. Gostaria de agradecer ao meu amigo Chogrin (que agora não está na Philadelphia... Recebeu um chamado da Cartoon Network!) pelo convite e pelo apoio durante as exposições desse ano...

American Illustration 28

"Mano A Mano" foi escolhida para fazer parte da galeria American Illustration 28. Fiquei muito feliz com a notícia, Mano A Mano é umas das minhas ilustrações preferidas!

A ilustração foi criada para seção Dito e Feito (que conta a origem de expressões que usamos no dia a dia) da revista Aventuras Na História. O título, "Mano A Mano", significava a disputa entre dois toureiros que alternadamente se apresentavam na arena.



One of my favorite illustrations - "Mano A Mano" - was chosen to be part of the American Illustration 28!

I did it for a Brazilian magazine called "Aventuras Na História" (Adventures Through History) that features an section called "Dito E Feito" (Said And Done) that tells a little bit about the origin of some expressions. In this case, Mano A Mano (which means "one vs. one") describes the match between two bullfighters taking turns to perform in front of the crowd in the arena.

Sancti Tantus

E nesse mês, dia 11, a partir das 19 horas, na Creperia Tio Gú (413 Sul) tem mais uma edição do Rabiscão, o encontro mensal de ilustradores de Brasilia. E o cara acima é o Sancti Tantus, ou se preferir, o "São Tantos", o patrono do Rabiscão. No último encontro foram sorteadas duas canecas com essa figura. Também tem camisetas disponíveis para quem quiser encomendar: No blog do Rabisdog!

This is Sancti Tantus, the patron of the Rabiscão, an illustrators meeting that takes place every month here in Brasília. I created this illo to promote the event and now there are mugs and t-shirts with Tantus available to boys and girls. If you speak portuguese, check the Rabiscão blog!

Dia De Los Muertos Art Show

A ilustração em destaque neste mês se chama "C'est la Mort" e estará na exposição "Dia de los Muertos Art Show" que acontecerá no dia 02 de outubro, na galeria Proximity Galleria na Philadelphia, Estados Unidos. Mais uma vez, a Autumn Society of Philadelphia está por trás desse evento.

8-Bit And Beyond Show

Hoje é a estréia da exposição "8-bit & Beyond", mais uma iniciativa da Autumn Society of Philadelphia, o mesmo coletivo de artistas por trás da bem-sucedida exposição "The Golden Age Show", que no Brasil foi tema de uma matéria no site Universo HQ!

Today is the day for the openning of the show "8-bit & Beyond" presented by the Autumn Society of Philadelphia! Following the awesome "The Golden Age Show", this new event "featuring the works from 50+ artists from Philly and around the world" will take place at Brave New Worlds comic shop in Philadelphia.



O tema do "8-bit & Beyond" é video games - desde Super Mario até Halo - e eu participo dessa exposição com uma ilustração inspirada no jogo Yar's Revenge, originalmente criado para o jurássico Atari em 1981 mas que recebeu uma nova versão para o Game Boy Color em 1999. Então... Acho que dá para dizer que é um jogo de 8-bits, não?

Por causa da ilustração da capa da versão do Atari, eu sempre pensei que o Yar fosse um tipo de mosca mecânica e então fui adiante com essa idéia. Abaixo, um pequeno detalhe da minha ilustração, o Yar:

"8-bit & Beyond" is about video games - from Super Mario Bros to Halo - and my piece is inspired by an old... I mean... classic game: Yar's Revenge! It's was a game originally developed for the Atari 2600 but it was remade for the Game Boy Color in 1999... I guess you can say it's an 8 bit game, right?

I always thought that the Yar was some kind of mechanic housefly (because of that illustration on the cover of the Atari 2600 version) so I went with this concept. Bellow you can see a small detail of the illustration, the Yar itself:




Também foi fonte de inspiração esses trabalhos de escola onde pedem para capturar um inseto e pregar numa caixa com uma etiqueta com o nome do bicho embaixo.

I also was inspired by those school assignments where you have to pin and label an insect inside a box. I tried to give that feel to my illustration.



Para finalizar, além de um monte de espaço em branco em volta do personagem, adicionei uma moldura também branca. O branco serve de ponte entre o jogo antigo e os novos consoles, em particular o Nintendo Wii.

In the final piece I used those huge white spaces surrounding the Yar character plus an all white frame to make a connection between the old game with the new generation of consoles, in particular the Nintendo Wii.

Cebolinha/Jimmy Five

O Jornal de Brasília publicou ontem, dia 17 de julho, uma grande reportagem sobre os 50 anos de carreira de Maurício de Sousa. Fui convidado para fazer um desenho, no meu estilo, de um dos personagens de Maurício e escolhi o Cebolinha, talvez o personagem com o visual mais interessante e diferente entre os quatro principais da Turma da Mônica.

Yesterday, Jornal de Brasília, a local newspaper, featured an article about the famous Brazilian cartoonist Maurício de Sousa and they asked me to draw one of the characters created by him. I chose a character called Jimmy Five mainly because of his interesting and somewhat weird look.

Um chamou o outro que chamou mais dez e quando olhamos ao redor, estávamos lá.

Há um mês atrás lancei no Ilustragrupo a idéia de fazer um encontro de ilustradores em Brasília, seguindo - mais ou menos - o molde do famoso Bistecão Ilustrado de São Paulo. E ontem, depois de várias conversas por e-mail (buscando um lugar, dia e horário), finalmente o encontro aconteceu!

O local escolhido foi o Rayuela Restaurante Cultural, Café e Livraria, na 412 Sul, que nos deu total apoio e gentilmente nos cedeu o espaço Lounge CD.

Gostei muito de ver tanta gente talentosa junta. Como disse o Werley Krohling (cuja ajuda e entusiasmo foram essenciais para que esse encontro virasse realidade): "Eu não devia trazer um sketchbook aqui. Eu devia trazer um caderno de autógrafos!" ...Mais verdadeiro, impossível.

Foi uma alegria conhecer pessoalmente artistas como Nádia Moya, Diniz, Cícero e re-encontrar velhos amigos que eu não via há muito tempo, como o Bruno e o Emerson, dois dos culpados pelos trabalhos espetaculares da Buraco de Bala.

O super Marceleza levou um sketchbook novinho em folha para a galera inaugurar. Tive a honra de rabiscar a primeira página! :0)

E o encontro também recebeu um nome: Rabiscão. E já tem uma página no Flickr.

Nossa proposta é que o Rabiscão seja um encontro mensal, um pretexto e oportunidade para que os ilustradores de Brasília possam encontrar outros ilustradores, jogar conversa fora, trocar experiências, comer e beber. Se você não bebe, não se preocupe que tem refrigerante ;0)

About a month ago I suggested to a couple of fellow illustrators the creation of an local illustrators meeting following the mold of the famous Bistecão, an artist meeting held in São Paulo every month.

Well, yesterday the meeting - named "Rabiscão" - took place at Rayuela Restaurant and was totally awesome. I was very happy to meet and talk to many talented local artists. You can see photos of the Rabiscão here.

I'm looking forward to the next meeting!

No início desse mês a Autumn Society organizou uma exposição sobre os Anos 80's que chegou a ser comentada no site Universo HQ. Dessa vez, vamos visitar uma época ainda mais remota: A Era de Ouro dos Quadrinhos e Desenhos Animados!

The Golden Age Show, premiering today, is the 4th gallery show from the Autumn Society of Philadelphia. In the last show, the theme was the 80's but this time those talented artists invite you to go back in time to an even more remote time: The Golden Age of Comics and Animation!



Popeye, Batman, Superman, Betty Boop, Chilly Willy (qual o nome desse personagem aqui no Brasil?) e vários outros personagens "de mil novecentos e antigamente"... Incluindo uma participação brasileira: Minha versão da personagem Fantomah: Mystery Woman of the Jungle, criada por Fletcher Hanks (sob o pseudonimo "Barclay Flagg") em 1940. Considerada a primeira super-heroína dos quadrinhos. Fantomah é uma das minhas personagens preferidas dessa época dos quadrinhos por ser tão estranha e marcante.

See Popeye, Batman, Superman, Betty Boop, Chilly Willy and other characters from the old times and also my own take on "Fantomah: Mystery Woman of the Jungle" created by Fletcher Hanks (under the pseudonym "Barclay Flagg") in 1940. She is considered to be the first female super-hero. She is one of my favorite comic book characters from the Golden Age of Comics because she is so strange and has this primal haunting feel about her.

De2ign Headers!

Nessa semana descobri um site muito legal chamado De2ign. Bom... Na verdade, eles é que me descobriram, publicando um post super bacana sobre o "Dollaritos" e o meu trabalho. A Barbara Formagio e Thiago Mano - responsáveis pelo De2ign - também me convidaram para participar do site com duas imagens para o header.

Em cada página, o header está presente em todas as páginas do site, alternando
randomicamente entre as obras dos artistas convidados. Show de bola!



This week I found this really cool web site called De2ign (In portuguese only... Sorry!). They posted a sweet article about me and my "Ten Dollaritos Bill" paper toy. The editors - Barbara Formagio e Thiago Mano - also invited me to contribute to their site creating two images to be displayed in the De2ign pages header. Check it out! Even if you don't speak portuguese, at least you are going to see some really nice headers...

Jam Session na HQMix Livraria

Na última semana de outubro participei da segunda temporada da Jam Session, um quadrinho coletivo promovido pela HQMix Livraria. Em "O Crime do Teishouko Preto" cada artista desenha uma página, começando do ponto onde o anterior parou e assim por diante.

"Isso parece ser uma coisa muito divertida" - foi o que pensei quando terminei de ler o convite. Mesmo sem nunca ter feito um quadrinho assim, "no repente", liguei para o Gual e agendei minha participação para o dia 26, no domingo (que também foi o dia da festa de aniversário da HQ Mix).

Fiquei com o capítulo 125. A proposta era fazer tudo na hora, então fiz tudo na mão, em preto e branco. Abaixo uma prévia...



Uma vantagem em ter sido um dos últimos do dia foi que tive a chance de ver os trabalhos de todos os artistas anteriores. Muito inspirador :)

In the last week of October I created a comic page for the second season of a project called Jam Session. Hosted by HQMix Livraria (a great comic book store located in São Paulo) this crazy comic book features the art of dozen of artists, each one creates a single page for the comic, taking the story forward into unsuspected twists.

I illustrated the chapter 125. And since it was one of the last chapters I had the opportunity to look at the original pages of many talent artists. Very inspiring!

The deal was creating the comic page "in loco" so I didn't use a computer. Only pencil, ink, pen and brushes.

Computer Arts #14, Portfolio e Eu/Computer Arts#14, Portfolio and Me

Hoje pude dar uma lida com calma na edição desse mês (número 14) da revista Computer Arts. A matéria da capa é sobre Portfólio e como projetos pessoais podem conquistar novos clientes. Outro aspecto importante sobre a inclusão de projetos pessoais no portfolio é que esses demonstram melhor quem é o ilustrador, quais são seus interesses e paixões. E, é claro, podem ajudar o llustrador a pegar mais trabalhos interessantes!

Today I had a good time reading this month edition of Computer Arts Brazil. The main article is about Portfolio and how personal projects can help you to get new clients. Another important thing about including personal projects in your portfolio is because they show more clearly who you are and where your interests and passion are. And - of course - the can help you to get more interesting works!



Ah... E na página 22, tem uma ilustração (de número 21) chamada To Grassland Station... No espaço Portfólio, eu falo um pouco sobre a criação essa ilustração e um pouco sobre meu estilo. Gostaria de agradecer mais uma vez ao pessoal da revista por ter selecionado meu trabalho, fiquei muito feliz com a oportunidade.

Ah... By the way... On the page 22 of the magazine you will find an illustration (numbered 21) called To Grassland Station. In the Portfolio section I talk about the creation of this illustration, my styte and a little about me. I would like to say thank you to the people behind Computer Arts for choosing to show my work. I'm very happy with this importunity.
