Antes do Vetor / Before the Vectors

Já me perguntaram se eu desenho direto no computador ou se faço no papel
antes... E às vezes também me pedem para dar uma olhada no desenho original à lápis...

Bom, na maioria das vezes, eu faço o desenho à lápis, jogo no scanner e depois finalizo no computador. Mas nem sempre é assim... Ilustrações como "Hey Taxi" foram feitas direto no computador. Dependendo da ilustração, um rápido esboço é o suficiente, como no caso de "Dream #15". Em outros casos, além de um esboço geral da cena, preciso de um desenho um pouco mais definido para me guiar, como no caso dos touros em "Mano A Mano".

Então, seguem abaixo alguns exemplos para quem tiver a curiosidade...

Sometimes somebody asks me if I create my illustrations directly on the computer or if I draw first using pencil and paper... People also ask me to see the pencil drawing so they can compare it to the final image...

I usually draw some pencil sketches using pencil and paper, but it's not always the case. For example, "Hey Taxi" was made directly on the computer. To create "Dream #15" the only pencil drawing was a rough sketch. In some cases I need a more detailed pencil drawing, like the bulls in the "Mano A Mano" illustration.

So, for those who are interested about this kind of stuff, I included some images comparing the pencil drawing to the final result...

O Nome da Águia

Dica para quem está buscando um pouco de entretenimento literário: O livro "O Nome da Águia", de Alexandre Lobão. O romance conta a disputa entre duas facções rivais - os kedoshim e os kittim - que se mistura à momentos importantes da história, como a queda do império romano, a Inquisição e a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A descoberta de um manuscrito perdido no bunker de Adolf Hitler revela que a luta entre essas facções ainda não terminou e tem o potencial de levar o mundo ao holocausto nuclear.

A história é envolvente e muito bem contada e o livro tem uma narrativa ágil o que torna a leitura muito agradável. Recomendo. Saiba mais no site do livro

"O Nome da Águia" (The Name of the Eagle) is a book written by brazilian writer Alexandre Lobão. It tells the story about the feud between two rival factions - the kedoshim and the kittim - and how their struggle is related with important milestones in the history of the world, like the fall of the roman empire, the inquisition and the World War II. The main characters found a hidden manuscript in a unexplored section of Adolf Hitler's bunker and found out that the fight between the kedoshim and the kittim continues till our times and has the potential to destroy the world starting a nuclear war.

The book is available only in Brazil... But...Who knows!

Spotlight: Mano A Mano

Mano A Mano é o nome da ilustração em destaque nesse mês. Foi feita para seção Dito e Feito (que conta a origem de expressões que usamos no dia a dia) da revista Aventuras Na História. Mano A Mano significava a disputa entre dois toureiros que alternadamente se apresentavam na arena.

Tourada é um tema cercado por controvérsia, com defensores apaixonados e críticos ferrenhos em campos opostos... Faz alguns anos assisti pela primeira vez a uma tourada em Madri: É difícil não sentir pena dos touros...

Gostei de incluir na ilustração o touro que aguarda sua vez lendo um livro, alheio ao que está acontecendo ao redor dele. Foi uma forma de sugerir que o animal possui sensibilidade, mesmo não compreendendo o que está acontecendo (além disso acrescenta um pouco de humor e leveza à cena)...

"Mano A Mano" is the title of this month's new illustration. I did it for a Brazilian magazine called "Aventuras Na História" (Adventures Through History) that features an section called "Dito E Feito" (Said And Done) that tells a little bit about the origin of some expressions. In this case, Mano A Mano (which means "one vs. one") describes the match between two bullfighters taking turns to perform in front of the crowd in the arena.

Bullfighting is surrounded by controversy with both enthusiasts and critics on each side. Years ago I had an opportunity to watch a bullfight in Madrid: I couldn't help but to feel sorry about the bull.

My favorite detail about this illustration is one of the bulls reading a book while waiting for the next round. It was a way to point out that the bull is a sensible creature (It also serves to add a little humor to the scene)...
